Without the capability to generate audit records, it would be difficult to establish, correlate, and investigate the events relating to an incident or identify those responsible for one. Audit records can be generated from various components within MariaDB (e.g., process, module). Certain specific application functionalities may be audited as well. The list of audited events is the set of events for which audits are to be generated. This set of events is typically a subset of the list of all events for which the system can generate audit records. DoW has defined the list of events for which MariaDB will provide an audit record generation capability as the following: (i) Successful and unsuccessful attempts to access, modify, or delete privileges, security objects, security levels, or categories of information (e.g., classification levels); (ii) Access actions, such as successful and unsuccessful logon attempts, privileged activities, or other system-level access, starting and ending time for user access to the system, concurrent logons from different workstations, successful and unsuccessful accesses to objects, all program initiations, and all direct access to the information system; and (iii) All account creation, modification, disabling, and termination actions. Organizations may define additional events requiring continuous or ad hoc auditing. Verify the MariaDB Enterprise audit plugin is installed and active: SHOW PLUGINS; Verify the "SERVER_AUDIT" plugin is installed and the status is "ACTIVE". If the plugin is not installed and the status is not "ACTIVE", this is a finding. Verify auditing is enabled: SHOW GLOBAL VARIABLES LIKE 'server_audit_logging'; Verify the "server_audit_logging" status is "ON". If the status is not "ON", this is a finding. Verify audit logging is active: SHOW GLOBAL STATUS LIKE 'Server_audit_active'; Verify the value is "ON". If the value is not "ON", this is a finding. Verify the system can audit required event types: SHOW GLOBAL VARIABLES LIKE 'server_audit_events'; Verify that auditable event types required by DoW policy (at a minimum, CONNECT, QUERY, TABLE, etc.) are configured. If required event types are not configured, this is a finding.
Configure MariaDB Enterprise Server 11.8 or higher to generate audit records containing the required audit event information. Install the MariaDB Enterprise audit plugin if it is not already installed. Log in to the database (mariadb -u root -p) and run: INSTALL PLUGIN server_audit SONAME 'server_audit'; Edit the "mariadb-enterprise.cnf" configuration file located in "/etc/my.cnf.d/". Under [mariadb], add/edit the following: [mariadb] plugin-load-add=server_audit server_audit_logging=ON server_audit_output_type=file server_audit_file_path=/var/log/mariadb/server_audit.log server_audit_events=CONNECT,QUERY,TABLE,QUERY_DDL Restart MariaDB if required for configuration changes to take effect: systemctl restart mariadb
