Information systems are capable of providing a wide variety of functions and services. Some of the functions and services, provided by default, may not be necessary to support essential organizational operations (e.g., key missions, functions). It is detrimental for software products to provide, or install by default, functionality exceeding requirements or mission objectives. DBMSs must adhere to the principles of least functionality by providing only essential capabilities. Satisfies: SRG-APP-000141-DB-000091, SRG-APP-000141-DB-000092
Connect to MariaDB using an administrative account from the operating system shell: mariadb -u root -p After connecting to the MariaDB client, run: SELECT engine, GROUP_CONCAT(DISTINCT TABLE_SCHEMA) Table_Schema_List, COUNT(*) FROM information_schema.tables GROUP BY engine; Review the output to determine which storage engines are in use. Review the installed plugins: SHOW PLUGINS; If unauthorized or unnecessary storage engines or plugins are enabled, this is a finding.
Update the MariaDB configuration file under the [mariadb] section to disable unused storage engines. Example: disabled_storage_engines="MyISAM,BLACKHOLE,FEDERATED,ARCHIVE" Restart the MariaDB service after modifying the configuration file. To uninstall unnecessary plugins, first connect to MariaDB: mariadb -u root -p Then run: UNINSTALL PLUGIN IF EXISTS plugin_name; or UNINSTALL SONAME IF EXISTS 'plugin_library'; Example: UNINSTALL SONAME IF EXISTS 'ha_example';
